Design is a top priority in Expat.’s Seminyak branch. Their aesthetic is modern industrial, with exposed technology everywhere. Top-mounted mirrors give a view of the operations behind the coffee bar, and they’ve customized so much of their space that it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo even if you try. Every corner of their store follows a monochromatic theme and this gorgeous custom-shop La Marzocco Linea PB with an exposed body is the star of the show. In this coffee shop, tattooed baristas look extremely badass pulling shots of espresso and steaming milk using — you guessed it — custom-made steaming pitchers!
Despite this traditionally rough-and-tumble aesthetic, the café and crew are still very approachable. The aesthetic is balanced out by the fun “aloha” shirts worn by the bar staff. We also like their choice of grinders, the Mahlkoenig EK43 and the Mythos from Victoria Arduino. Both are stylish and have superb quality in terms of the grind output from these machines. But don’t be intimidated when you get here, the baristas are friendly, knowledgeable and will definitely have answers to your coffee queries. The quality of service in Expat. is outstanding and they even guide you through picking a bag of coffee beans to bring home or when selecting coffee equipment from their retail section — so you’ll feel just as badass making coffee at home.
