Sweet or savory, can’t decide on what to pair with your single origin coffee? Well, at Blackbird in Valencia’s Ruzafa neighborhood there are no wrong answers.
They have a variety of both sweet and savory selections that are all made in their shop. You’ll most definitely catch them in their kitchen cooking up some doughnuts or avocado toast — all visible to the public because through a giant glass wall that allows customers to see the process. They have very high standards for both coffee and pastries which is a welcome sight in the city.
Valencia being the land of oranges, we chose an orange roll to pair with our flat white which had the perfect amount of sweetness. Our coffee was a single origin from Colombia’s Lomo Linda and was roasted by Trike Koffee of Pais Vasco. The pastry somehow brought out the chocolate flavor note of our flat white but also brightened it up. Coffee-orange pairings and concoctions have been done before but this particular match left us with an orange chocolate aftertaste that we can’t quite forget.
