Specialty coffee amongst fresh seafood and jamon, Retrogusto Coffeemates is intriguingly located in Valencia’s Central Market. Locally known as Mercado Central de Valencia, the location is known for its iconic Valencian Art Nouveau architecture. You’ll know you’re in the right place once you see the beautiful tile facade and stained glass windows. There is a sense of surprise and excitement when coming across this coffee stall. Responding to the discovery, we picked up a flat white to nurse while weaving through aisles of cured meats, cheeses and souvenirs. Perfect moments look like this. It was an experience in itself.
Retrogusto Coffeemates is a multi roastery concept, which means that it serves beans from various Spanish roasters such as Rightside Coffee Roasters. If you drop by their stall you’ll most likely catch one of the founders on duty. They’re very much owner-run and during our visit, it was Martina who made us our flat white using a single origin Colombia coffee. Its pleasant caramel notes paired well with the savory jamon serrano we got from the neighboring stall. Who would even dream of placing a specialty coffee shop in a market? Martina and Paula did.
