Between the number of places we visited on our trip to Malaysia, one place stood out among the rest. Within the bustling city center of Kuala Lumpur where the energy is high and always on the go, we found our space at Ver – the bar at Nadodi, down an ornate passageway inside the Four Seasons Hotel with an intricately designed facade and a stunning arch doorway that pulls you to step inside. Even before you walk through the entrance, Ver’s storytelling had begun.

Their menu — inspired by South Indian and Sri Lankan childhood games, treats and flavors — is divided into 4 sections: Stones, Hitters, Seekers and Nomadic Classics. It was presented to us in a box drawer with a gold-embossed tiger welcoming us into the game.

A quick glance at the menu, and I can already see that the flavors are well thought out. It’s done with whimsy and playfulness. Each drink gives homage to their roots, with some even using spirits made in and imported from Sri Lanka and India.

Visual presentation toed the line between clean and fun. My favorite from the night was the Nomadic Compass, a floral and aromatic highball. It was served with a map coaster and a working compass – a nice touch without going overboard on the theme. I always appreciate it when a bar gets playful in their service.

But beyond the theatrics, the cocktails themselves were the highlight. The Mango Bite has that familiar taste of fruity sweetness but balanced with a warmth of spice and freshness of cucumber.

The Lagori, a zero ABV cocktail with notes of almond and tamarind. And a bespoke martini made with pink guava and Sri Lankan vodka. No drink was out of place. Each brought its own character that plays a part in Ver’s game.

Everything in this bar was done right. From the striking design details and cozy atmosphere, down to the story telling and its cocktails. Each element is well thought out and plays a part in their identity. And when the experience is this well designed, it puts the guest at ease. Ready to enjoy fine drinks, good company, and in the mood to participate in the play. We took part in their game and it was a blast.
