“No alcoholic beverage should be served unless served with food.” This was a decree issued by King Alfonso the Wise after recovering from an illness that only permitted him to take in food and wine in very small portions. Thanks to this 13th century legend, Hong Kong’s The Wise King, one of the finest bars in the world, has come up with a creative cocktail menu incorporating “little snacks” into each drink. The one we tried is a Spanish take on a classic — the Jamon Old Fashioned. It is a decadent combination of Jamon Iberico-infused bourbon, cantaloupe syrup and walnut bitters with a simple yet tasty garnish of premium dry-cured jamon. Sounds like quite a snack, don’t you think?
This exquisite concoction of strong flavors — savory, sour and nutty all at once — seem to boost one’s confidence with every sip. Could it just be the bourbon? The fine ingredients? Maybe it’s the bar’s sophisticated interiors, the leather seating and elaborate walls that lead one feel just that extra bit… regal? Or perhaps it’s really all of these elements in harmony, layered like a finely crafted cocktail that create such an opulent experience fit for kings and queens.
